Dr David Inwald
David is one of our Bye-Fellows and a Director of Studies for our undergraduates studying Medicine. He is a consultant in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Addenbrooke's Hospital, with the East of England Paediatric Intensive Care retrieval service, and the PaNDR (Paediatric and Neonatal Decision support and Retrieval service).
Biography
He qualified from the University of Cambridge as an undergraduate at Emmanuel. He then trained in adult and paediatric medicine before completing his clinical training at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. During this time he also completed my PhD at the Institute of Child Health. Before joining the team at Addenbrooke's, he was a consultant in paediatric intensive care at St Mary's Hospital in London, and an honorary senior lecturer in paediatrics at Imperial College London for 15 years.
Teaching
David teaches our undergraduate courses in both Medical Sciences and Clinical Medicine. His research teaching relates largely to Ethics and Law in Medicine.
Research
David's research concerns clinical trials, pathophysiology and management of sepsis, and patient safety in critically ill children. He is Chair of the Haemodynamics Group in the SCCM/ESICM Pediatric Sepsis Guideline update (currently in progress) and the Chief Investigator of PRESSURE (PRotocolised Evaluation of permiSSive blood pressure targets versus Usual caRE). This is a planned randomised controlled trial to evaluate the clinical and cost effectiveness of using a more permissive blood pressure target to guide titration of vasoactive agents in critically ill children with hypotension.
